THE 10 TYPES OF PEOPLE YOU MEET IN A SINGAPORE UNIVERSITY

Studying in NUS for close to 6 months, I have met many people from different faculties and different walks of lives. Some friends add value to your life, some shape you to be a better person, some make you cry and some make you reflect. These are just the 10 kinds of people I met and maybe you'll find them familiar

(1) The Nerd

These are the people who prepare for every single lesson, eager to participate for every lesson and impress their teachers. Everything that comes out of their mouth seems well thought through, and very intelligent. You wish they would impart some of their knowledge to you, but they are just born a different league. You can't beat them. They ace every examinations and stare at you when you say the paper was difficult. To top it off, not all the nerds mug in the library all the time. They just somehow understand everything from lectures/tutorials, so they don't have to study as hard. They ruin the bell curve, but some of them are very nice and are willing to help you clear your doubts.

(2) The Wild Child

To smoking, tattoos and clubbing, these people are in for everything "wild". They seem cool and nonchalant about many things. Every week club. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday also club. Zouk might as well be their bedroom. But my friends that land in this league are really nice people. They are loyal and can be good listeners too!

(3) The Study So Hard Also CMI

Aren't there just some unlucky ones that study so hard but yet, never seem to do well in their exams. Not that they do terribly, I mean if you managed to enrol in a university, you can't be THAT bad. But the amount of work they put in is not at all proportional to their results. You think to yourself "Maybe they are studying the wrong way" but you dare not tell them because these people have already put in their best that you can't rub salt into their wound so directly.

(4) The All Rounder

subtly adding in a photo of bae

Oh, I am so envious of these people. Social Life yes, Results yes, Money yes, Looks yes, Body yes, Character yes, THEY HAVE EVERYTHING YOU WANT. I have only met one of this kind of people but that's enough man. Anymore and I'll die of jealousy already.

(5) The Friends That Stick

Not everyone can find friends that stick with them through everything. And if you do, be very grateful! Appreciate these people because they literally love you for who you are. They don't judge you, they are there for everything that happens to you. Call them best friends, or whatever, but you are one lucky soul if you have these people around you.

(6) The "I only want to be friends with Cool People" Person

On one hand where you have friends that are great, you also have these kind of people. Friggin disgusted at these people. They judge you on what you wear, the words you say, and your whole persona. They secretly categorise you under "Cool" or "Uncool" in their heads. And if you are fortunately slotted under "Uncool", you will never cross paths with these kind of people. Note that you can hop over to "Cool" at any time (not that you asked for it), and then you have to act with caution, making sure you spot these people ASAP and break all ties with them. These people make you doubt yourself and should not have the privilege of knowing you!

(7) The Fashionista

Everyday, this person dresses in a different outfit. While it is a fresh change from the norm of students clad in FBTs, school shirts and slippers, you sometimes wonder how big their wardrobe exactly is and how much do they spend on shopping.

(8) The Sotong

There are the blur ones and I think I am one of these people too. I didn't know about the existence of recess week till 3 days beforehand. I came to school early before, not knowing that lessons were cancelled. And I sometimes only find out that there is homework while chatting with my friends. Hehe, luckily for me, some of my good friends remind me of important stuff occasionally. My butt is saved.

(9) The "I love my previous school" person

They love the previous institution they studied at, and it's obvious. They talk fondly of their previous school very often, and go back to visit their previous school VERY OFTEN. Every university lecturer deserves a comparison to their previous teachers in their ex school, and almost everything in fact.

(10) The Social Butterfly

They are very active on almost every single social media platform. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Vine, Snapchat etc etc. And I guiltily admit I fall under this category too. But I don't think I am addicted to these. I just like having different platforms to entertain myself with heehee. Recently, I am snapchatting almost everything I do?!?! Like how I sent almost 10 snaps to my friends while camping at Utown last night with wing heehee. Follow me on Snapchat if you want : mycutiepiegal (DONT JUDGE) !!

That's all I can think of. This list is not exhaustive I know!

Hope y'all have a great week ahead, and be optimistic!!

Love,
Xin Hui

FOR THE SLEEPY, THE CALM, AND KIND SOUL

Updates!! I have just moved into my hostel for the second semester of my university life. I suspect that my room is slightly bigger than my previous room, not sure. Spent last night decorating my room with fairy lights balls that I bought from Chatuchak Market, Thailand. It adds such a homely touch to my room, and I went into slumber with these beautiful soothing yellow lights accompanying me.

I spent close to 10 hours studying in the Macs Common today. Tired, but not stressed out. Just reading my textbooks and preparing for lessons. Wing came to accompany me in the evening and I was reminded by how we used to study all the time last sem together. Even though we missed each other’s company for the past month, nothing much has really changed between us. She still folds the subway wrapper everytime before she starts devouring her sandwich, she still holds the door for me, she still sticks with me to the very last minute of my studying even though she’s really tired, and still so excited about clubbing. We decided to eat some ice cream before we went back to our hostel, and made plans for next monday’s overnight slumber/picnic/h2h session at Utown. Hehe, we even allocated duties and made a packing list. It feels strange parting at different blocks of our hostel, since I am now not staying in the same room opposite her, but I know that won’t change our friendship.

Sam, Charis and I studied in the day before they left for lessons etc, and we made Tuesday our weekly studying day!!!! hehe. I still laugh when I think about how Sam made this gross "Ahhhh Ahhhh" sound (story for another day) HAHAH. This fashion terrorist even wore purple elephant pants to school today (omg). I objected vehemently to her buying those in Bangkok, but she just wouldn’t listen. Tsk. Nvm, since I promised not to laugh at her if she really does wear it in front of me, I shan’t. THE PANTS LOOK GORGEOUS ON YOU SAM.

I just started a Spotify Account. Username : Han Sooyong Kelliewongxinhui BobbestJr. If you follow me, then I suppose you’re really free to type that long string of alphabets into your search engine. Most songs have a special meaning to me, and when I hear the song, I think of someone/something in particular. Like how when I hear Thinking Out Loud, I think of Sam and our Bangkok adventures. When I hear One Direction’s You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful, I think about my first relationship in Junior College and that guy. Or when I hear Taylor Swift’s Our Song, I think about this secondary school friend that I used to be really close to, but time and different lives forced us apart. And I wonder whether they think of me when they hear these songs too. I listen to the lyrics of the song really closely, and my habit of listening to a song on repeat endlessly really helps me to delve deeper into the meaning of each song. So even though I really like Sam Smith’s I Know I’m not the only one, I cannot bring myself to hear it all the time, because the betrayal portrayed in the song just makes me feel really sad and empty. Oh well, music has a special place in my heart.

I am preparing to shoot a vlog this weekend, so here’s a heads up for my avid fans that check back on my blog regularly hehe. It’s fashion related! I am not sure if I can finish editing and all by this weekend, but I’ll try. Or at most, just wait till the following weekend comes. You can find my Youtube account here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PdEjIFGL0Q  and probably check out my Best Friend Tag video I did with Sam 2 weeks ago.

Also!! I am really proud of myself, I have been making quite healthy eating options recently! I just want to be more mindful of what I eat this year and treat my body right yep. I recently fell in love with swimming too, so I have been swimming quite often! Is this the start of my #fitgirl95 journey?! Hahah, or maybe it’s just a temporary addiction.

PS. Is it strange how this supposedly life changing day turns out to be so peaceful for me?

I hope you all have a really nice week ahead. This helped me start each new day on a better note, so I am just going to share it here with y’all. Every morning, I say a thank you prayer to God. Thank God that even if you had a bad day yesterday, He granted you the chance to start today afresh. Everyday, people die in their sleep and you’re not one of them. If you focus on that, you’ll start to have a grateful heart for even the slightest event that happens today. If you’re not religious, then just say it aloud to yourself. :)

Xin Hui

#TEAMSXADVENTURES GOES TO BANGKOK

Hello! I’m Samantha and I’m writing this blogpost about our Bangkok trip specially for Xinhui’s blog (she’s written one on my blog as well). To be completely honest, I was a little apprehensive about this trip for a few reasons, including the cost (I’m really broke lol) and my current situation. But in the end, it turned out to be a great getaway from everything and a breather before semester 2 starts.

Here are some of the highlights of the trip!

My favourite meal at Inter, Siam Square
The pad thai and tom yum were SO good! Sorry to the waitress I didn’t tip though haha

The picture I risked my life to take at Lumpini park! I hope this picture makes up for my accidentally hurting XH’s toe by paddling the boat too fast :/

Madame Tussauds at Siam Discovery

I love this photo from Siam Ocean World, the colours are so nice!

An artistic shot taken by Xinhui at Siam Park City
Even though I really dreaded going to the theme park the day before, it turned out to be pretty fun ☺ I’m glad XH helped me to push out of my comfort zone by convincing me to go on some of the really scary-looking rides.

Caturday cat café
I really loved this part of the trip but I don’t think XH enjoyed it as much as I did because she wanted the cats to go to her to play but they just minded their own business and ate and slept instead haha. I’m thankful that she didn’t complain but instead just listened to me gushing about how cute and pretty the cats were even though she was probably really bored.

And speaking of the company on this trip, I couldn’t have had a better travel companion.

Xinhui took care of almost everything, from booking the groupon for our hotel and flight, to finding the best money changer. Since it was my first time going overseas without my family or school to guide me, she was really a godsend. I will learn and do the work next time we go overseas together! I am so grateful because she did this without complaining at all, instead she was always trying to make sure things were alright with me.

Sometimes XH’s blind optimism would make me wonder how a person can put so much trust in God’s plans. And that is something that I think I can learn from her. On the second day of the trip, I fell sick with a headache and fever, but I had no time to stop and feel sorry for myself because XH kept an upbeat and positive attitude, which, I’m convinced, is what made me feel better the next day. She also told me to stop and say a short prayer for me to feel better, which I didn’t even think of doing myself. She may not know it, but in this area XH is not only my best friend, but also my role model.

I know sometimes I may not be the most expressive person, but I hope Xinhui can understand that even though I don’t show it I still love her a lot <3 (even though sometimes she annoys me to death when she plays her music out loud and when we argue about petty things haha)

Here’s to more adventures together in the future!

xx.

Exciting stuff

2014

Happy New Year to everybody! 2014 has slipped through our fingers and a whole year now lays ahead for us to explore. Well, I guess it is more of a necessary ritual to go through the highlights of 2014 and pen down my thoughts. So in the past 365 days, here are some things I enjoyed/experienced

1. Working as a waitress

My first time working as a waitress and while it was a source of pocket money for me, I found it to be quite a bore nearing the last few months of my work. Maybe this also shows my personality. I feel excited for most things at the beginning then my excitement wears off, and I start to get bored. This relates to a lot of things. My work, my hobbies, a game app, etc. My biggest takeaway is that I realise i can not work as something I don't enjoy. So in future, if I was offered with a boring yet high paying job, I'll just reject it.

2. Release of A levels results

Well, this was the highlight of my year. As mentioned on my instagram, that day was the "happiest day of my life". Looking back, exaggeration yes. but I remember the moment as everything has paid off. My hard work, my perseverance. It reminds me of tough times, and immense gratitude for the people around me.

3. Holidays

Traveller should be my middle name. I love travelling. Actually, I love Changi Airport too. I get so excited everytime I go to the airport and check in, and walk through the departure gates, and go on the plane, and all. This year, I spent a lot of my money travelling but I think it's money well spent. I've been to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Bangkok and Bali. I will be saving more money to travel to further places in 2015, though to me, holiday is not about the distance between Singapore and the holiday destination, but the feeling and experiences you take away from the holiday.

4. University

University is a lot more different from what I imagined it to be. It's not exactly smooth-sailing, but it has had its fair share of interesting times too. Perhaps the thing I didn't expect is that I am unable to "fit in". But then again, I don't know what is the definition of "fitting in". Do I have to be able to find a friend at every turn, and always having to be surrounded by people I know? Maybe "fitting in" is equivalent to a scene where you can be studying alone, and friends suddenly pop next to you, striking a conversation about some interesting thing that happened blah blah. Maybe "fitting in" is having a spot everywhere you go. Then, in that case, I don't think I have "fitted in". Am I bothered? I would be lying if I said no. But I would also be lying if I said I am upset over it. I just don't feel anything towards it now. For me, I am glad to know I have people to ask help from, I don't have to eat alone blah blah. I like privacy, and I guess this is a good change. I have my bffs, and they somehow become my everything in university.

5. The Hiccup

This blog is for you to read, but it never started with the intention to get me famous or anything. I just feel that my memory lacks the capability of remembering everything that happened so it's good to write it somewhere. Number 5, is for my memory, and not so for you to read. This is the hiccup in my life. It's going to change most things in my life, and I am hurt, I am surprised, I am shaken. But I am okay. I know God will help me every step of the way. So don't worry about me. It'll help if you can pray for me. I'll appreciate that :)

That's 2014 for me. If I can describe 2014 in one word, it's Blessed. I am a blessed child.

How has your 2014 been?

Love,
Xin Hui
